Autism & Cannabis Explained Part Three

Can you believe that April is almost over? April is National Autism Awareness Month and we are here to talk about Autism and Cannabis! We asked several mothers across the state of Oklahoma to share their children’s journey with Autism and Cannabis. We made this a three-part series to truly highlight the stories we are sharing.

Understanding Autism

As stated by Chip and Cynthia Paul of Truemedx, “Autism is a very complicated and complex set of disorders that stem from needed genetic expression being turned off, needed genetic expressions being improperly encoded, or unneeded genetic expressions improperly turned on. By virtue of these improper genetic expressions, the autistic individual’s body, from metabolism to the highest functions, has to adapt to survive.”1 A more in-depth look shows that “severely autistic folks cannot ‘inflame’ or ‘deflame’, which means they cannot run a basic immune system.  They have deficiencies in their endocannabinoid system with the two main molecules needed to run the endocannabinoid system.  These deficiencies cause a “lack of control” in the master regulatory system.”2

Bubba’s Story

Speaking with Christa Shaefer, the other half of OKanna Moms, she shared her son, Bubba’s story. At 2½ years old, Bubba was diagnosed with Level III Severe Autism Spectrum Disorder and Childhood Speech Apraxia. He began to attend ABA therapy at the age of 4 – this behavioral therapy seemed to show to most progress for him after trying so many different types of therapy with little to no progress. At around 6 years old, his aggression toward others and self-harming was at a peak during melt-downs. They tried one pharmaceutical with him for two weeks and the best way Christa can explain it is that her son was like a zombie; he had no emotion or energy and bags had begun to form under his little eyes. She weaned him off the medication as recommended by the doctor and suddenly his energy came back, but so did his aggression. Christa knew she had to do something for her son to help him find his calm and live the best quality of life possible. She decided that Cannabis would be the only medicine that Bubba would use.

This healing journey of Cannabis began before SQ788 and while it was not yet legal in Oklahoma – it was like the missing piece for Bubba. He began not only to show more progress, but to master goals he had worked for years on at therapy. In June 2018, when medicinal Cannabis was approved by the voters of Oklahoma, Christa mentioned it felt like the biggest weight was lifted off of them as his parents; that they could finally breathe. She was desperate to help her son while scared to death at the same time to risk losing him if someone were to find out. After the very first dose of Cannabis Oil she knew they had made the right decision. She made a lot of trips to Colorado to purchase his medicine and she understood d that with every single trip, she was risking everything. There is really no measure of how far a mother will sometimes go to help her child.

Today, Bubba is now almost 12 years old and not only is the aggression rarely seen; he is also fully potty-trained, can tie his shoes, and read a book. But among all of those great accomplishments, Cannabis has changed her family’s life the most by giving her son the ability to enjoy life. As their lives are still very much routine based, it is manageable if the routine changes. She feels that understanding the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) and utilizing Cannabinoids other than THC-only is key to successful medicinal Cannabis use in children with Autism. An important thing Christa wants everyone to know about having a child with Autism is to not be afraid to step outside of the box in finding what works best for you and your family as all children are different.

Jon’s Story

We were also fortunate to get to speak with Heather Starr, an Advocate for Autism, who shared her son, Jon’s story. She began by stating that Cannabis gave her son a voice—Jon was completely nonverbal, as in couldn’t even imitate sounds, let alone speak words. Yet 2 months after Jon began using Cannabis, she heard “I love you mom” for the first time ever. Sleep was also one of the biggest challenges for Jon. He struggled not only with falling asleep, but he also struggled with staying asleep—problems he has faced since he was 3 years old. There were times they would go well over 24 hours with 0 hours of sleep. As you could imagine, that is extremely hard for your brain to function on. Therefore, letting his body and brain get some deep rest has been a major game changer for him as well. Jon also struggles with anxiety, which Cannabis has allowed them to go out in public and do things as a family; things that would typically be too overwhelming/overstimulating for him.

An important thing Heather wants everyone to know about having a child with Autism is that those children and adults with Autism are still people; they aren’t just a diagnosis. They still have unique personalities/qualities that they add to this world. Having a child with Autism can be a challenge, but it’s been one of the biggest blessings in our lives. She said, “Yes, Jon has Autism, but that isn’t who he is. God gets to work through him and show others how amazing He is.”

History of Cannabis

In honor of 4/20 yesterday, we are sharing the history of Cannabis. It has been used for thousands of years in a variety of manners – tools, food, and medicinal purposes to name a few. Over the years this plant has been celebrated, shunned, and is being brought back into the spotlight once again. The history of Cannabis doesn’t begin in the recent years of re-legalization, nor in the 1970’s when the war on drugs began. The history of Cannabis begins several thousands of years ago in Taiwan.

Earliest Uses

As far back as 8000 BCE1 in Taiwan, Cannabis (Hemp) was used to create pots, fishing nets, ropes, paper, clothes, and other various items. Around 6000 BCE in China, Cannabis seeds were recorded as being used for food and oil. The first known use of Cannabis for its medical qualities can be linked to the Chinese Emperor Fu Hsi in 2900 BCE. He made references to “Ma” (the Chinese word for Cannabis) and considered Cannabis to be a medicine that demonstrated both yin and yang. 200 years later, around 2700 BCE, Emperor Shen Nung of China is said to have discovered the healing qualities Cannabis possesses. He concentrated on its potential as a medication for rheumatism, malaria, gout, menstrual problems, among other health issues.

Moving southwest to India, Cannabis has a long history cloaked in legends and religion. The earliest mention of Cannabis has been found in The Vedas, or sacred Hindu texts. These writings may have been composed anywhere from between 2000 to 1400 BCE. On their website, THC Museum states that “The Vedas call cannabis a source of happiness, joy-giver, liberator that was compassionately given to humans to help us attain delight and lose fear.”2 Bhang, an edible mixture consisting of dried cannabis leaves, seeds, and stems and typically mixed with milk to make into a drink, is mentioned in another Hindu sacred text, Atharvaveda. Also, around the same time period [2000 BCE], Ancient Egyptians were prescribing Cannabis to be used as treatment for glaucoma, inflammation, and as a suppository to treat hemorrhoids.

Historical Uses

Around the 1400s – frames, sails, ropes, and cords made from Cannabis (Hemp) began to emerge on Italian ships. Hemp sails would eventually replace flax sails as those rotted more quickly due to the salt spray from the ocean. King Henry VIII of England created a law in 1533 to satisfy the increased demand for rope and sailcloth of his navy, in which all landholders had to use ¼ of an acre to cultivate Cannabis (Hemp) for every 60 acres of land that they tilled. Queen Elizabeth I reintroduced this law and imposed a fine for any lord who failed to comply. Around the time of Shakespeare, who also used Cannabis for its mind-stimulating properties, Jamestown settlers brought Cannabis to North America. George Washington’s diary illustrates his particular interest in the medical use of Cannabis; focusing on growing Cannabis with a high Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) content, or in other words, Marijuana.

In 1850, Marijuana made its way onto the United States Pharmacopoeia as a treatment option for numerous afflictions. From then until 1915, it was easily accessible for purchase at pharmacies and general stores. In 1914, the Harrison Act in the United States defined the use of Marijuana, amongst other drugs, a crime.3 In 1936, a propaganda film titled Reefer Madness, which was originally dubbed Tell Your Children, was created and distributed to intimidate American youth away from using Cannabis. A year later, the U.S. Congress passed the Marijuana Tax Act, criminalizing the plant that not a century before had been put on the United States Pharmacopoeia. Although in 1941, Cannabis was removed from the U.S. Pharmacopoeia and the medicinal uses, once celebrated, were no longer officially recognized in America. Fast forward to the 1970s, the Nixon administration started the war on drugs by declaring drug abuse to be “public enemy number one”. In 1986, President Reagan signed the Anti-Drug Abuse Act continuing the war on drugs era.

Escaping Reefer Madness

In 2022, while Cannabis remains classified as a Schedule 1 substance under the Controlled Substances Act. Schedule 1 substances are considered to have a high potential for addiction with no accepted medical uses. As of the publishing of this article—37 states, 4 territories, and the District of Columbia—allow the medicinal use of Cannabis products.4 Here in Oklahoma, the voters of the state approved State Question 788  on June 26th 2018. We have been enjoying the benefits of medicinal Cannabis use for almost 4 full years now. Lincoln’s Story

Speaking with Kimberlee Green, a Cannabis Advocate Wellness Coach, she wondered where to start in telling her son Lincoln’s story. As of this article, they are 3 years into Lincoln’s Cannabis journey. After his first dose, he was sitting on her lap saying I love you mom and kissing all over her face because she was crying tears of joy. Tears of joy that were caused by what amazed them—Lincoln is nonverbal. Quickly he started singing along to his favorite songs and television shows—seemingly less anxious about using his voice. Lincoln is becoming more and more verbal because he is able to focus during school and therapy. He has the willingness to try new foods and has been getting better rest at night—both of which are helping him truly thrive. Kimberlee stated that it was like they are starting to see his personality shine through, but it isn’t just his parents. His teachers, therapist, and medical team are all so excited for the progress he has been making!

Lincoln is only using Cannabis and 1 prescription medication that aides him in resting at night. However, the prescription med is amplified with Cannabis, so they have never had to increase his dose. Kimberlee and her husband grow specific strains of Cannabis for Lincoln, which she then cooks into his favorite treats.

An important thing Kimberlee wants everyone to know about having a child with Autism is that it’s a super power! Her son’s brain works in such a magical way; he learns differently than others and it is incredible to watch.

An Anonymous Story

We also had the opportunity to speak with a mother who wished to remain anonymous, but wanted to share her son’s story. While he is an adult now at 28 years old, most of his story took place before Cannabis became legal for medicinal use in Oklahoma in 2018.

In 2002, at 8 years old, her child was diagnosed with Autism, which back then it was Asperger’s. He had always struggled with touch sensory, noise sensory, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors. As a freshman or sophomore in high school, he began using Cannabis which wasn’t legal at the time. The mother we spoke with said she was strongly against it and was worried about her son’s Cannabis use. Until she saw the changes Cannabis began making in her son’s life. What Cannabis has done has taken the edge off, to where he can function more normally; he can tolerate everything more normally. Cannabis helped take the edge off of his anger as well and it helps make him more comfortable.

He now lives on his own and has been using Cannabis for about 13 years. He has had to figure out what works best for him—which the funny thing is, the other day he tried an edible, it didn’t work out so well for him. So, he went back to his bong, or he might be using a pipe now, and used what he knew would work for him. Cannabis is the only medicine he uses now, as he has tried different prescription medications in the past but those medicines would put him in a stupor. The Cannabis works better for him because he is in charge of his own dosing and he knows what works for him. The effect is just different, it’s hard to explain, but with prescriptions (like Klonopin) putting him into a stupor since the doctors couldn’t get the correct dose figured out, Cannabis actually let him live!

An important thing this mother wants everyone to know about having a child with Autism is that having an autistic child feel comfortable in their own skin is an entirely different ballgame than having a neurotypical child feel comfortable in their own skin. Her child has had to learn how to feel comfortable in the world of neurotypical people, he’s the one who had to learn how to adjust and be comfortable. He doesn’t pick up on social cues nor innuendos, not eye contact or body movement; that just doesn’t come natural to him. So, for neurotypicals who don’t know him, they might think he’s weird, but this is just how he was made. He thinks outside of the box all the time and it really opened up their families’ way of thinking—they aren’t as closed minded as they once were. It has changed their family for the better.

Christianity & Cannabis

Can Christianity and Cannabis co-exist? I am a Christian, is it okay for me to use Medical Marijuana? What will my Christian friends think if I use Medical Cannabis? With Easter right around the corner, we thought it important to talk about Christianity and Cannabis. For a Believer, or anyone who has grown up in a morally conservative environment, the idea of using Marijuana for medicine can be a hard thing to wrap their mind around. In our lifetime, mainstream American culture, as well as Christian culture, has looked at Marijuana use as something that is only bad for you. Opponents say it is a gateway drug, the devil’s weed, the devil’s lettuce, the devil’s smokestick—that the only reason to use marijuana is to get high, it will kill you, it is harmful, it is addictive, that only potheads use Marijuana, it is only for the hippie culture, and even more outrageous claims. Claims like it will turn you into a zombie person, a flat person, cause you to want to make a hat out of ground beef; the ridiculous claims and absurd propaganda go on and on. This is what many of us have been taught to believe.

Where to Start

Most Christians will feel absolutely clueless about using Medical Cannabis for medicine and they will struggle with the stigma, embarrassment, guilt, and/or shame. They will feel alone—mainly because they don’t want to tell anyone that they are medicating with Cannabis. And why is that? We genuinely believe it is because we don’t know the truth. Could we just truthfully examine what we are dealing with here? The Cannabis plant was created by God and He said it was good.

Genesis 1:11-12: And God said, “Let the earth sprout vegetation, plants yielding seed, and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, on the earth.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation, plants yielding seed according to their own kinds, and trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind. And God saw that it was good

Did you know God created this plant with all 21 amino acids our bodies require? Until Prohibition in 1937, Cannabis was in our food supply, our daily diet even, as it was being fed to livestock! Cannabis is high in much-desired fatty acids, such as: Omega 3, Omega 6, Omega 9, and GLA. It is also very high in proteins, which contain every amino acid, high in fiber, aiding an animal’s digestive system, and it is a good source of minerals, such as: Copper, Iron, Boron, Manganese, Nitrogen and Zinc. Perhaps another day we can discuss and examine what this banishment from our food supply has done to the health of Americans.

Be Sober-Minded

There are some people that abuse Cannabis. YES! Some do… But we challenge you – can you please name something that our AMAZING and HOLY God has created that humanity has not perverted and/or abused?? The answer to that question is a resounding NO. That fact does not give license to abuse it, God’s word is clear.

1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
1 Peter 4:7, “The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.”

Being sober minded and self-controlled should be a priority for a Believer. It is what God asks of us and our obedience is worship and brings Him glory! Cannabis can absolutely be used within the confines of sober mindedness and self-control. That is called dosing. Just like with any medication, you take several certain amounts throughout the day to achieve a health goal – that certain amount is the amount that will help solve your health concern while keeping you safe, sober minded, and in control. Cannabis is the same. We can use this plant for what it was created for and how it was intended to be used—in our diet to treat illness and pain naturally with NO side effects. It can also be refined into a variety of commercial items, including: paper, textiles, clothing, biodegradable plastics, paint, insulation, biofuel, food, and animal feed. You would be hard pressed to find another God given plant that has this much to offer by way of provision. It literally provides everything we need to survive. That is not accidental, that is intentional and is provided to us by a loving God who promises to give us everything we need to live an abundant life.

Beginning my Cannabis Journey as a Christian

All of this to say, we believe the answer is yes! Christianity and Marijuana can co-exist. Yes! It is ok for you to use Medical Cannabis if you are a Christian. What will my Christian friends think if you use Medical Cannabis? We don’t know, but here is the thing, that is not up to you and you cannot control someone’s response. Focus on what you can control and what is true. Medical Cannabis is a good, natural, and medical option for your health concerns. Find support, encouragement and help, you don’t have to navigate this journey of health, healing

and wellness on your own! Our founder Jennifer Hawkins is here to help you find your way with Medical Cannabis from overcoming the stigma to helping you with dosing through a Patient Care Consultation. To schedule an appointment, reach out to our patient line (301) 778-HAWK(4295) and ask to book a Patient Care Consultation!

Autism & Cannabis Explained Part One

Can you believe April is already here? April is National Autism Awareness Month and we are here to talk about Autism and Cannabis! We asked several mothers across the state of Oklahoma to share their children’s journey with Autism and Cannabis. We made this a three-part series to truly highlight the stories we are sharing.

Understanding Autism

As stated by Chip and Cynthia Paul of Truemedx, “Autism is a very complicated and complex set of disorders that stem from needed genetic expression being turned off, needed genetic expressions being improperly encoded, or unneeded genetic expressions improperly turned on. Kayden’s Story

Speaking with Mattie Badgwell, one-half of OKannaMoms, she shared a little bit of her son Kayden’s story with us. She began by saying that Cannabis has completely changed his life. Not only is administering his meds easier now, but he willingly takes his Oil. He went from 4 different medications he had to take 2-3 times a day—to now, he only takes 1-3 mls of Cannabis Oil daily. There are no harmful side effects like he used to experience from prescription medicines, so Mattie no longer has to guess if his behavior is from his Autism, or if it is a side effect from the medication. Kayden is more focused and engaging now. Since using Cannabis, Kayden has had zero regression. Whereas he used to have consistent regression in his development, and he would lose abilities and skills periodically—they haven’t experienced that since beginning the use of Cannabis. Also, they go weeks at a time without any self-harming or property destruction; his meltdowns have decreased as well. Whereas before, even on pharmaceuticals, he was having daily meltdowns where he would bite himself and throw his head into a wall.

An important thing Mattie wants everyone to know about having a child with Autism is that their Autism doesn’t define who they are and to do what you feel is best for your child. You will hear a lot of voices telling you what to do and what not to do; but those opinions are based off of that person’s experience with Autism and does not represent what is best for your child.

Eli’s Story

We also had the opportunity to speak with Sara Kimbrell, founder of Drop It Like Its Hot Meal Prep service. She stated that her son Eli had been treated like a guinea pig, trying every behavior and seizure medication out there. But then they made to switch to using only Cannabis Oil. Now he only takes the Oil daily—and only takes .25 ml daily of a 1:1 tincture (3-5mg). Sara said Eli has been seizure-free for over 2 years now. They weren’t focusing on the seizures at first, it was a focus on mood—so they did as needed—but then when they could see it making a difference, they moved to daily use of Cannabis Oil. Sara thinks over time they just noticed they hadn’t seen Eli have any seizures in a while. He was also having really bad tics that also slowed down dramatically.

I talked with Sara about her recent business venture Drop It Like Its Hot – a meal prep service focused on healthy portions and tasty meals. Not only did she start a meal prep business, she has been working out like crazy! I wondered what might be the inspiration for these lifestyle changes—she explained that it was Eli, her son. He is her why. She doesn’t have a plan B for who would raise him if she died. It lit a fire under her butt to get busy and live a healthier lifestyle, not only for herself, but for her son too. She wanted to set a positive example for him. Eli is 15 and used to not eat that many vegetables or fruits, but she has really been encouraging it and Eli has been such a good sport about eating more fruits and veggies!

An important thing Sara wants everyone to know about having a child with Autism is that you never give up on them. Push them to try everything! Eli is 15 and he does more around the house now than her neurotypical teen did! He makes his bed, he hangs up his clothes, he rinses his dishes, and he carries out the trash. He cleans the toilet, the sink, and the vanity. He is such a help! Encourage your children to try new things. One thing she would also tell someone that has a younger child is to avoid letting them have electronics at an early age. Eli was so fascinated at about 3 or 4 years old and he is obsessed with his phone, iPad, and YouTube. Sometimes she thinks that hinders him, and sometimes she thinks it helps; but too much of one thing is probably not good.
